What is the FTTP rollout?
FTTP is the next generation of broadband which sees fibre optic cables being fitted right to your home. This is a massive change to the way broadband has been done before and due to the complexity is taking a while to reach the maximum number of homes.
The UK government has plans to reach 85% of homes with gigabit enabled broadband. This is obviously a huge undertaking that involves engineers from lots of different providers. Openreach themselves want to be able to deliver FTTP to 25m homes by 2026!
The table above shows the progress of the FTTP rollout, so far. We take this information from ThinkBroadband.co.uk.
How does FTTP work?
Fibre optic cables connect directly from the local broadband exchange, straight to your premises. There is no copper wiring used at all which means there is better reliability.
FTTP delivers much faster broadband speeds than the traditional fibre connections FTTC or copper, ADSL.
